Blue Island Divers is proud to support Roatan Marine Park!

A healthy reef depends on all of us.

ABout Roatan Marine Park

The Roatan Marine Park (RMP) is a grassroots, community-based, nonprofit organization located on the island of Roatan, 50 kilometers off the mainland coast of Honduras.

The RMP was formed in January 2005 when a group of concerned dive operators and local businesses united in an effort to protect Roatan’s fragile coral reefs. Initially, it was RMP’s goal to run a patrol program within the Sandy Bay-West End Marine Reserve (SBWEMR), to prevent over-exploitation through unsustainable fishing practices. Over time, RMP expanded the scope of their environmental efforts through the addition of other programs encompassing the entire island.

Blue Island Divers is an active supporter and Gold Sponsor of the Roatan Marine Park. Blue Island Divers also hosts our local patrol boat, and we are visited often at our dock by the friendly rangers who safeguard our reef.

In February 2018, Blue Island Divers made a donation to the RMP to complete safety improvements to the park’s system of buoys and boat channel markers to ensure that kayakers and snorkelers who depart from our dock have a clearly marked area to use while enjoying the inner lagoon. We still encourage all those entering the water to utilize a safety marker or other hi-vis marker for visual aid.

For participating in all Blue Island Divers Roatan dives or courses, guests are strongly encouraged to make a small donation to the RMP. Single day use tickets are $3, and yearly bracelets or keychains are $10. The protection of Roatan’s beautiful reefs depends on all of us!

You may also name a special dive site for a $1,000 donation to the Roatan Marine Park.  A mooring line will be installed upon this location and it will be shared by all who visit our wonderful reef! Impress your spouse or loved ones with their own custom-named site by donating to a great program which encourages boats to utilize static moorings instead of anchors which can damage the reef.
